History of Modern Western Theatre provides an overview of theatre in Western Europe and the United States from the the early Nineteenth Century to the present. Through readings, lectures, and video presentations, the course explores the ways in which the modern theatre has dramatized social and artistic change, from the political, industrial, and economic revolutions of the Nineteenth Century to the working class, countercultural, and technological transformations of the Twentieth. The course examines major theatrical movements, such as Realism, Naturalism, and Expressionism; and representative plays, such as Ibsen’s A Doll House, Chekhov’s The Cherry Orchard, Brecht’s The Good Person of Setzuan, Miller’s Death of a Salesman, and Kushner’s Angels in America. Assignments include readings of plays and written exams.
