Political Economy of Developing and Emerging Economies

Welcome to Political Economy of Developing and Emerging Economies. Millions of lives around the world are impacted by poverty, natural disasters and other crises every year. Frequently, the people affected tend to live in countries that lack the autonomous capacities to pursue development without the assistance of international development agencies, foreign governments and NGOs.  The development of a country requires a multi-layered approach, taking into account the diversity of failures, the particularities of country related issues and, in most cases, the lack of development that already existed in the period preceding the crisis.
Political Economy of Developing and Emerging Economies explores how countries develop and look at the role of the international community in contributing to development.  This course introduces students to a cross section of academic topics relevant to development, including, economic development, international relations, access to justice and gender studies. The course offers a basic introduction to key policy issues and understanding of the theory behind issues such as economic growth, poverty, education, social welfare and extends this to provide students with understanding of how to look at the socio and economic impact different policy decisions.
There are a considerable number of real world cross country examples provided in the course. We will also provide a very specific look at topical global issues confronting nations such as social protection, privatization and how to measure corruption, and access to justice for the poorest across the world and how international organisations confront these problems.
The course will be highly practical, helping students to develop their analytical thinking and their ability to communicate effectively and think analytically in English
