Psychological Disorders in Adults and their Treatments will introduce students to the DSM-V, the classification system for psychiatric disorders used in the United States. The course will examine a range of different categories of disorders. Each class will focus on a particular disorder or group of disorders, including, among others, personality disorders, depression, anxiety, trauma-based disorders, adjustment disorders, and bipolar disorders. The course will explore psychological approaches to treatment of these disorders in the United States, as well as the benefits and disadvantages of treatment with psychiatric medication. There will be some discussion of Western versus non-Western approaches to understanding and treating psychological disorders.
