Peer-Support: Understanding and helping yourself and others

“Peer-Support: Understanding and helping yourself and others” is designed to provide students the knowledge and skills to better understand themselves and to actively support and assist other students. The course will provide the principles, information, and guidelines to develop and to apply peer-support skills, with a particular focus on the psychosocial needs of university students. Through self-reflection, discussion, and interactive exercises, the students in the course will learn relevant skills including developing supportive relationships, reflective listening to others experiencing psychosocial difficulties, providing active support to others, and guiding others to seek professional assistance when appropriate. The course will not involve the diagnosis and treatment of students in it, and the course will not provide professional training to those students to diagnose and treat the problems of others. The course will lead students in it to better understand themselves and to be equipped to provide peer-support to others, especially in the university setting.
